The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is the last surviving tiger subspecies in Indonesia, following the extinction of the Balinese and Javan tigers in the 20th century. Fewer than 400 tigers remain in the wild, holding out in national parks and mountainous forest refuges across Sumatra.
